B2B growth marketing: the lead generation levers that really bring qualified leads

Key Takeaways

  • A high volume of leads does not generate pipeline if channels are tuned to the simple completed form and if marketing and sales track different indicators.
  • Prefilled LinkedIn forms, generic white papers, Performance Max without CRM feedback and Meta without a starting base bring volume, whereas Google Ads connected to the CRM, Meta fed with a base of decision-makers, SEO, GEO, ABM and executive thought leadership bring real MQLs.
  • Three conversion rates measure quality by channel: Lead to MQL, MQL to SQL, and SQL to customer.

B2B growth marketing: the lead generation levers that really bring qualified leads
‍

A CMO knows how to launch campaigns that bring contacts into the CRM. The harder question is how many of those contacts a salesperson will want to call back. A growth marketing strategy is judged on what happens to the contacts after the form.
‍

1.Why do lead targets that are met not produce pipeline?
‍

There are two causes. A channel optimizes what it is asked to: set on the completed form, it looks for people who complete forms. And each team tracks its own indicator: cost per lead for paid media, downloads for content, opportunities for sales.

An MQL is a lead that matches the persona: right function, right company, right role in the decision. An SQL is an MQL that a salesperson has validated after a first conversation. Lead scoring follows the same rule: the persona decides whether the lead is an MQL, behavior decides the callback order.
‍

The persona is not enough. According to the Edelman-LinkedIn 2025 report, more than 40% of B2B deals are blocked because the buying committee does not agree internally. The person who fills in your form is rarely the one who signs.
‍

2.Which B2B lead generation levers produce pipeline, and which mostly produce contacts?
‍

A single criterion lets you sort: the result the channel is optimized on.
‍

Which levers bring contacts but not pipeline?
‍

Prefilled LinkedIn forms. Lead Gen Forms reuse profile data. The contact has only one click to make, and their intent is unknown. We keep them for retargeting and strong offers, with a qualifying question (team size, project, timeline). Otherwise, we send traffic to a B2B landing page.
‍

Generic white papers. A broad topic attracts students, competitors and consultants. A sector benchmark or a study for a specific function attracts the right persona.
‍

Performance Max without CRM feedback. The campaign learns from one thing only: submitted forms. Sending MQLs and SQLs to Google Ads, with offline conversion import, gives it a better objective.
‍

Google Ads: what does qualification change at Exotec?
‍

Exotec, a French unicorn that raised €335 million, wanted to gain visibility in the United States and Germany, and to digitize lead qualification for its salespeople. We ran a test and learn on channels, content and audiences, with SEO, SEA and Performance Max campaigns. Result: 20% of Exotec’s qualified prospects come from Google campaigns.
‍

This figure concerns qualified prospects, not forms. Digitized qualification gave marketing and sales a shared criterion, and each campaign was compared against that criterion. Our guide to Google advertising in B2B details the settings: queries with strong professional intent, exclusion of students and individuals.
‍

3.SEO and GEO: how to be visible when the buyer asks an AI first?
‍

B2B SEO answers a demand that already exists. B2B inbound marketing brings MQLs when it targets decision queries: comparisons, methods, selection criteria.
‍

In the Gartner survey of March 2026, conducted among 646 B2B buyers, 67% prefer a purchase without a salesperson and 45% used AI during a recent purchase. Each committee member asks their own question: cost for the finance director, use for the user, integration for the CIO. The AI’s answer reuses what the cited sources say about you.
‍

B2B GEO consists of being cited in those answers, with pages that clearly answer decision questions and proof from outside: press, interviews, studies, customer reviews. A GEO audit shows where your brand stands, and our analysis on turning visibility into demand details the effect on revenue.
‍

4.LinkedIn: how to reach the committee members that advertising does not reach?
‍

LinkedIn Ads targets by function, seniority level, industry and company size. It also allows retargeting with Matched Audiences.
‍

Posts are a free channel. The Edelman-LinkedIn study, conducted among 1,934 executives, shows that 73% of targeted decision-makers consider expertise content more effective than traditional marketing and sales materials. It also shows that 41% of the decision-makers that targeting does not reach were encouraged by an executive to consider a vendor after reading this type of content. These committee members are in no paid audience. Executive and employee posts reach them.
‍

5.ABM: should you target accounts rather than leads?
‍

Account-based marketing (ABM) works the opposite way to classic lead generation: marketing and sales choose a list of priority accounts together and address personalized actions to them, to several contacts per account. It is the most direct answer to the buying committee. A first test on a few accounts is enough to validate the interest.
‍

6.Meta: can you generate B2B MQLs on Facebook and Instagram?
‍

Yes, provided you give it a base of decision-makers. For the launch of Doritos Pro in France, PepsiCo Foodservice had no usable CRM base, no campaign history and three months of test budget. We first built an enriched base of priority decision-makers (restaurateurs, bars, cinemas, leisure parks). LinkedIn reached the qualified B2B audience, then Meta widened coverage and re-reached the interested audiences, with a free kit as the lead magnet.
‍

The test produced 272 leads in three months, five times the media plan estimate, with a cost per lead of €7.37 on the best-performing ad after optimization. Meta became the first lead generator, ahead of LinkedIn, and the best-performing audience was a lookalike built on the database. At Carea Façade, which targets architects, Facebook increased leads by 106% versus the previous period, whereas the team thought they would acquire them mainly via LinkedIn.
‍

7.Which conversion rates measure the quality of the leads generated?
‍

Three rates, calculated by channel and by campaign, give the diagnosis:

  • Lead to MQL. It measures the quality of the leads generated: what share of contacts matches the persona. If it is low, look at targeting, the offer or the form.
  • MQL to SQL. It measures the share of MQLs that have a chance of signing. If it is low, look at lead scoring and the agreement between marketing and sales.
  • SQL to customer. This is the closing rate. If it is low, look at the sales work, the offer, or a buying committee that is not convinced.

These rates are read alongside the cost per SQL. A channel that is cheap per lead but weak in MQLs often costs more per SQL than a more expensive channel that brings only MQLs. The pipeline generated and the B2B customer acquisition cost complete the analysis. These marketing KPIs are calculated by account rather than by contact, with attribution across all touchpoints rather than last click, which sees neither executive posts nor AI citations.
‍

In Dave McClure’s AARRR funnel, lead generation covers acquisition and activation. These three rates measure the passage from activation to revenue, where losses are greatest. They are reliable only if the B2B CRM is clean: the four questions on customer data help you assess yours.
‍

8.How to get marketing and sales to agree on what a qualified lead is?
‍

The disagreement appears when marketing hands a lead to sales. A lead can be “qualified” for marketing and unusable for sales. Three questions answer it: what is a valuable opportunity, with criteria validated together? What happens at each handover: trigger, expected action, callback time? Who decides in case of disagreement?
‍

A simple RACI sets the roles. Marketing is responsible for the scoring model. Sales is accountable for validation. CRM or data teams are consulted, and management is informed through a joint review.
‍

KPMG France shows what this changes. Charlotte Gillardeau set the goal of running marketing like a business unit: the reference indicator moved from campaign activity to the sales opportunity in the CRM. We detailed the audit mission carried out with KPMG France. Jean-Paul Bouteloup, CMO of PwC France and Maghreb, discusses this alignment in his “In the Shoes of a CMO” interview.
‍

9.How to choose your levers according to your situation?
‍

The choice depends on the length of the sales cycle, contract value, number of target accounts and marketing maturity. A company with a high average order value that targets a few dozen accounts chooses ABM and expertise content. An offer for a broader market relies on SEO, Google Ads and Meta. An audit of what exists is the best starting point.
‍

Once the qualified lead is generated, what follows falls under lead nurturing and B2B marketing automation, which serve to trigger the purchase or the upsell. Our article on email automation presents the principles.
‍

FAQ: frequently asked questions on B2B lead generation
‍

How long before judging a lever?
The lead to MQL rate can be read within a few weeks. The MQL to SQL rate requires a first round of feedback from sales. The SQL to customer rate is read over a full sales cycle.
‍

How do you measure the effect of LinkedIn thought leadership posts and AI citations?
With three signals: the source declared by prospects (a free field “how did you hear about us?”), target accounts’ interaction with posts, and the speed at which exposed accounts become SQLs compared with unexposed accounts.
‍

Does growth hacking still have a place in B2B?
Yes, to quickly test a message, an audience or a creative. Each test is kept or stopped according to its effect on MQLs and SQLs.
‍

A management question before a channel question

To know how to generate qualified leads in B2B, start by looking at the objective each channel receives. If your reporting says how many leads arrive but not how many become opportunities, that is the gap to analyze. Classic attribution models do not see everything: B2B customer acquisition also goes through channels that last click ignores. Let’s discuss your situation.
